Dr. Atkinson’s current research interests include multidisciplinary, integrated model development for aquatic ecosystem management, and application of engineering principles to stream restoration. Recent projects include development of a coupled hydrodynamic and particle tracking model to understand circulation and spreading patterns in the Lower Great Lakes, and fine-grain sediment transport in the Buffalo River (Buffalo, NY), as well as more fundamental studies on mixing in open channel flows, including interactions between turbulence and suspended sediment. He is currently working on nearshore water quality problems in Lake Ontario, developing nested hydrodynamic models to simulate near-shore processes with finer spatial resolution than is available with current whole-lake models. His research has been funded by the National Science Foundation, US Environmental Protection Agency, New York Sea Grant, American Water Works Association, New York Department of Environmental Conservation, and several private firms. He is the author or co-author of nearly 100 papers, reports, and book chapters, including 58 journal publications and one textbook.
