Neighbors on Emerald and Thorton Points and SOS members came out by canoe and kayak on Saturday for the 2nd Creek water chestnut pull and picnic. Special thanks to SOS members Mary and George Schenk for being our hosts and Laurie and Jim Verbridge for a great lunch and dessert.
Thanks to Lindsey and her crew from Wayne County Soil & Water who brought the harvester and really cool “Got Weeds” T-shirts.
Dr. Boyer showed up for his first water chestnut pull and was initiated as a true chestnut steward when he found out the bottom of 2nd creek is a little mucky.
George explained to the group the importance of our work because the the weed harvester can’t reach the shallow near shore areas. He said if we didn’t hand pull after the harvester came through the water chestnuts would be pushed out int the Bay making the situation worse.
